EMW’s Dr. Arno Kosko to Speak at the Wireless Communication
Association International Conference in Washington, DC
Progress For Iraqi Wireless Networks To Be Aired June 29-30
At WCA 2005
Herndon, Virginia (June 27, 2005) — The most authoritative
public description to date of Iraqi progress in building new regulatory
and communications systems will be on June 29 and 30 here as part
of the broadband wireless industry’s annual global convention
WCA 2005. Organized by the Wireless
Communications Association International (WCA) each year in
Washington, DC, the industry’s premier annual convention this
year is from June 28 to July 1 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.
Leading both sessions will be Dr. Arno J. Kosko, who is making his
first public comments after returning from a nine-month assignment
in Iraq with the Iraqi Reconstruction Management Office (IRMO) at
United States Embassy in Iraq and with the Ministry of Communications
of Iraq. His mission abroad was to manage the reconstruction of
the Iraqi telecommunications infrastructure. In this extremely difficult
environment, he developed a reputation for delivering on time and
on budget. He is currently senior vice president for business development
at WCA member company EMW Inc. following his work as the senior
consultant in IRMO’s Office of Communications. He is a recognized
expert in the field, with over 40 years of experience in the telecommunications
industry, including high-profile endeavors for the U.S. government
and a number of pioneering international communications firms.
The first discussion begins at 11:15 a.m. on June 29, focusing in-depth
on changes in Iraqi’s regulatory structure for communications
and the results. Asiacell CEO Humam Abuamara is scheduled to travel
from Iraq to join Dr. Kosko for this discussion, which includes
a segment about Asiacell’s success in the wireless consumer
market. By the middle of this spring, Asiacell (a WCA member) had
signed up more than 700,000 customers since it launched the nation’s
first GSM network in December, 2003.
The second discussion is at 8 a.m. on June 30, focusing on wireless
as key to promoting public safety and economic development in Iraq.
Joining Dr. Kosko in an expert roundtable will be: J.S. (Jake) MacLeod,
who is principal vice president and CTO at Bechtel Engineering &
Technology, Norman D. Sandler, who is director for global strategic
issues at Motorola, and Daniel McWhorter, who is vice president
for government solutions at Lucent Technologies. Each of these executives
and companies has played a vital role in building Iraq’s new
infrastructure. This is the first such public discussion of results
and next steps.
